AdMob, Yahoo and YouTube Veteran Tony Nethercutt Joins Mojiva as General Manager

It seems that Google does not behave as they should.
AdMob's CEO Omar Hamoui was leaving just 5 months after Google's purchase of Admob and now another AdMob vet and former Google exec, Tony Nethercutt, is leaving the search giant to join mobile ad firm Mojiva, as General Manager.

Mojiva Bolsters Executive Team as the Company is Poised for Exponential 2011 Growth

NEW YORK (January 4, 2011) – Mojiva Inc., parent company to the Mojiva mobile ad network and Mocean Mobile ad platform, announced today that Tony Nethercutt, a 15-year veteran in the digital media and mobile sales industry, has joined in a newly created position of General Manager, North America.

As Vice President of Sales for Admob, Nethercutt is credited with creating the sales, account management, ad operations, and creative services organization. Google acquired AdMob in May of 2010 for $750 million. Nethercutt had remained with Google after the acquisition until joining Mojiva.

As General Manager, North America at Mojiva Inc., Nethercutt will be responsible for driving revenue to further expand the company’s growing footprint in global mobile advertising and publishing. He will focus his attention towards building Mocean Mobile’s market-leading MAST Advertising Platform as well as the Mojiva Network.

“I had the pleasure of hiring Tony into DoubleClick in ’97 as we were really starting to grow and know what he is capable of. He has truly emerged as an industry leader, in digital media and mobile.” said David Gwozdz, CEO of Mojiva Inc. “His extensive knowledge building advertising sales powerhouse’s is an asset that will push Mojiva Inc. and specifically Mocean Mobile forward. With the explosion of smartphone and tablet usage propelling the mobile display market, we have grown to the point where we needed this level of executive talent to help develop customer solutions and I am thrilled that Tony sees the opportunity we have to do great things here under his leadership.”

28 percent of U.S. mobile phone users have smartphones

According to the latest figures from Nielsen, 28 percent of U.S. mobile phone owners own smartphones, as of the Q3 2010.

The strong growth was attributed mainly to an explosion in iPhone and Android device sales.

While all data firms release different numbers for the same data, the consensus is clear. RIM still leads the market, with Apple a close second. Android, seeing incredible growth, continues to take share.
For the quarter, RIM controlled 30 percent of the U.S. market for smartphones, followed by the iPhone at 28 percent. Android has moved to 19 percent share.

Getting into interesting demographics, RIM had the most users over the age of 45, while Apple had the most under 45. Over 50 percent of Android users were under 35 years of age.

Over the past six months, 41 percent of all new phone buyers are choosing to purchase smartphones, a six percent increase from the six month period before it.

AdMob Founder Omar Hamoui Leaves Google For Personal Reasons

Sometimes founders are obligated to stay for a year or two after their company has been acquired, and sometimes things unravel a lot faster. Google (NSDQ: GOOG) is confirming a report in TechCrunch that AdMob Founder and CEO Omar Hamoui is leaving five months after his company was scooped up by Google for $750 million.

Google says Hamoui is leaving for personal reasons, and it seems to be at Google’s expense. This piece of the report hasn’t been confirmed, but it sounds like AdMob’s employees were able to begin enjoying the incentives from the acquisition when the deal was first completed in Oct. or Nov. 2009—not when it received the official rubber stamp from the government, which held up things up until May. Therefore, by that measure, Hamoui has actually been around for about a year.

Other AdMob departures may be on the way with TechCrunch already listing two: AdMob’s VP of Product Management Ali Diab and AdMob’s VP of Business Development Niren Hiro. Meanwhile, Google recently hired Jeremy Arnon, formerly of Apple’s iAd, as Strategic Partner Development Manager of Commerce.

In a statement, Google said: “Omar has decided to leave AdMob and Google for personal reasons. He built a fantastic business in a short period of time, and we wish him all the best. Mobile advertising – across search and display – is now a billion dollar business for Google, with AdMob a key part of that. Google is fortunate to have a great team of leaders who are driving the next phase of rapid growth and innovation across all our mobile ads products.”
